History

A five-mile-long and less than a mile-wide island is called Caye Caulker. It is situated 0.5 miles west of the second-largest barrier reef and 21 miles from the capital of Belize. The most recognizable feature of the island, the “Split,” separates Caye Caulker’s southern and northern islands, the latter of which has only lately received electricity and water. The South Island is home to the tranquil town of Caye Caulker, which is known for its sandy streets and vivid tropical hues.

Tourism has gradually supplanted fishing as the principal industry in what was formerly a fishing community in the Caribbean known for its lobster catch. With no vehicles and paved roads, only sand paths with bicycles and a few golf carts, Caye Caulker maintains its small-town feel.

Caye Caulker maintains its welcoming atmosphere. The island’s hamlet is dotted with authentic, colourful clapboard homes, family-run restaurants, palapa bars, and a slew of regional street artists.

“Go Slow,” the island’s catchphrase, best captures the relaxed, genuine mood. Visitors come to the island to enjoy world-class diving and snorkeling or simply to relax. Everyone can find something to enjoy. You can take a snorkeling cruise to the Caye Caulker or Hol Chan Marine Reserves to see the vibrant coral reef gardens and swim with turtles, fish of every colour, nurse sharks, manatees, and other marine life. For more strenuous activities, world-class fishing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and jet skiing are available.

Sit back, sip something refreshing while gazing out over the water, and enjoy the end of another fantastic day.
